Our students stay in community homes where they become part of the family and community. Newcomb provides international and residential coordinators that check on the students in home and at school on a regular basis. Our host families are all well known to the school district and background checks are completed on every family member. Most of our students come back for visits to their home away from home. We work hard to find that "forever" home for our international students.
Newcomb has small classes with highly qualified teachers to provide all the support needed for students to excel. Seniors who are are diligent students may be able to graduate from a New York State public high school. We also have a unique dual enrollment with 2 colleges which the students have the opportunity to earn up to 25 college credits while still in high school.
Newcomb Central School also has a commitment to STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Math). Students work collaboratively in groups to facilitate peer teaching. Student work group provides opportunities for a rich curriculum and cross curricular ties.
Friday afternoons are an opportunity for the students to participate in a variety of clubs such as Stock Market, Outdoor Club, Photography, Archery and many more!
Most of our international and residential students also enjoy participating in sports, chorus, band, art and drama. There's something for everyone!!
The natural untouched land that surrounds Newcomb is extremely beautiful, and this beauty is one of the biggest reasons why so many students choose to spend a year in Newcomb. Everywhere you turn, there’s nature, and no matter what you do you’re sharing space with trees and plants, animals and wildlife, waterways and ecosystems, and more. This immersion in nature gives all who live here an elevated appreciation and respect for the natural world.
Immersing in nature and prioritizing active lifestyles nurtured by education in the mountains undoubtedly yields exceptional skill development. Problem-solving, teamwork, discipline and commitment, and other productive traits are all pivotal lessons to be learned from living in the Adirondacks. Since education in the mountains is so immersed in nature, it’s easy to cultivate hobbies and passions that get the body moving.
Newcomb Central is considered the foundation for community, where people of all ages have an opportunity to connect. Education at NCS creates a strong framework for collaboration, creativity, and for collective participation in our small community of just over 400 people. This is a significant reason why American families choose to build their lives here. Our Newcomb students have learned eclectic skills and have had novel experiences, and they enjoy doing it alongside their international peers.
International Students looking to earn a diploma from Newcomb must enroll in US History, English, Biology, Physics and Algebra/Trigonometry. Personalized learning is an educational approach that is used in Newcomb. This allows the what, when, where and how of learning to be tailored to meet each student’s strengths, skills, needs, and interests. International Students have clear goals and desires for why they have come to the United States to study. We want to support YOU!
